Speech and Feeding Questions in Lafayette

The questions parents ask us on the phone, answered here the same way we answer them there. Nothing hedged, nothing padded. If yours is not on this page, call and we will answer it before you book anything.

01Common Questions

What parents ask us before the first visit.

The first visit is an evaluation, not a rushed look at a checklist. We talk with you about what you have noticed at home, when it started, and what a hard day actually looks like. Then we watch your child play, eat or talk, depending on why you came in, and we look at the mechanism underneath: the oral muscles, the resting posture, the listening, the sounds. You leave knowing what we found, whether therapy is warranted, and what the plan would be.

You do not need a referral to book an evaluation with us. Some insurance plans do require a physician referral before they will pay, so we check that when we verify your benefits and we tell you before your first visit.

Coverage for speech and feeding therapy varies more than almost any other service, so we verify your benefits before your first visit and tell you the real number. Self-pay rates are available and we will walk you through them honestly.

Bring your insurance card, a photo ID, and anything anyone has already written down: a report from school, notes from your pediatrician, a letter from a dentist or an ENT. If feeding is the reason you are coming, bring the bottle, cup or foods your child actually uses at home, and try to come when your child would normally be hungry. To prepare your child, tell them they are going to play with a teacher who helps with talking or eating. That is enough. You do not need to practice anything first.

That is set at the evaluation rather than before it, because a newborn working on a latch and a six year old working on one stubborn sound do not need the same schedule. What we can tell you now is that the time is one on one with your therapist, and it is planned around your child's attention span and your family's week. We tell you the schedule we think is right, tell you why, then adjust it as your child changes instead of holding you to a number set on day one.

Yes, and we would rather you did. You are the one feeding your child at six on a Wednesday evening, so the strategies have to work in your hands and not only in ours. You will see what we are doing and why, and you will practice it with your therapist standing next to you. If your child settles better when you step out for part of a visit, that is fine too. We talk it through with you rather than making it a rule.

Home practice is short, specific, and built into things you already do: a few minutes of oral exercises after a bath, one target sound in the car, one new texture at dinner. We show you exactly how it should look, watch you do it once, and fix it before you leave. We would rather give you two things you will actually do than a printed sheet of twelve that stays in the diaper bag. If a week gets away from you, say so and we will make it smaller.

At the evaluation we write down where your child is starting, in plain terms: which sounds are missing, which textures get refused, how a feed ends. Those become the goals, and we track them visit by visit instead of relying on a feeling. You get an update in the room every time you come, and we sit down with you at set points to look at what moved, what did not, and whether the plan should change. If something is not working, you will hear it from us first.

Some days a child is tired, teething, coming down with something, or simply finished. That is normal and it does not waste the visit. Your therapist follows what your child can give that day: an easier target, more play, or time spent coaching you through the thing that is hardest at home. Nobody is going to push your child through a task just to fill the hour. Speech and feeding progress is built on a child who feels safe, so we protect that first.

Most families notice something small inside the first few weeks: a new sound, an easier feed, a calmer meal. The full timeline depends on what we find at the evaluation, and we give you an honest estimate then rather than a number that sounds good.

Call the office at (337) 478-5880 during our hours, Tuesday through Friday, 8:00am to 6:00pm, or email frontoffice@hopetherapy.co. Scheduling, insurance and paperwork questions go to the front office. If the question is about the therapy itself, for example a home exercise that is not going well or a feed that suddenly got harder, tell us and we will get it to your therapist. You do not have to wait until the next visit to ask.

Discharge is planned, not sudden. As your child reaches the goals we set at the evaluation, visits usually spread out and more of the work moves to you at home. When the skill holds in the places that matter, at the table, at school, on the playground, without anyone prompting it, we start talking about finishing. You leave with the home strategies that keep it holding, and you can call us again later if something changes. Finishing well is the point of the plan.

Speech therapy works on how your child communicates: the sounds they can make, the words they have, how smoothly it comes out, and how much of what you say they take in. Feeding therapy works on how your child eats and drinks: the latch, the suck and swallow, chewing, the textures they will accept, and the muscles and tissues underneath all of it. The two overlap more than most parents expect, because the same tongue and jaw do both jobs. You do not have to know which one you need. That is what the evaluation is for.
